In 1780, the father of Dr. Franz Werner, the renowned "Domdechant" (dean) of the Cathedral of Mainz, acquired the estate in Hochheim. Domdechant Werner is credited with having saved the Cathedral from being demolished during the French Revolution and was responsible for its reconstruction. Today, the estate still bears his name and is owned and operated by the 7th generation of the family. The vineyards extend over 12 ha (30 acres), all on gentle slopes facing south with chalky soils rich in minerals. Therefore, the wines are rich in extract and with excellent potential for aging. According to the estate's chronicle, its wines were sold at auction as early as 1795, a practice continued today. They have won prizes in national competitions since 1875 and are found in leading wine shops and restaurants in Europe and abroad. Some 40% of the production is exported.
